Fishing Report Saco Bay Tackle

The larger, 30-40 inch striped bass are here and can be found in the rivers from the mouth to the dam. They are feeding mainly on sand eels and herring, and lures that imitate either will work very well. Some of these include SP minnows, Sebile Magic Swimmers, Hogys, paddletail swimbaits, pencil poppers and spooks.  At the mouth of the Saco River, Camp Ellis has been productive at nearly all tides for both schoolie and keeper stripers. The same can be said for the Sandy Bottom fishing access on the Ferry rd. in Saco, and the area around Marblehead boat launch in Biddeford, except that the incoming tide has been the most productive. Trolling up and down the river with a weighted tube and worm rig is an excellent way for a persistent angler to catch trophy stripers. The stripers have also been running bait up at the dams in Saco and can be caught on herring or lures that mimic a herring. Please be aware of the law that bans fishing past the walking bridge and remember to pick up all of your trash. Reports have also come in of mackerel in the Bay, around the islands in front of the mouth of the Saco river and off the jetty. Some stripers are also showing up on the beaches and are hitting mackerel and sandworms the best.

In the freshwater lakes and ponds, can be caught both shallow and deep on topwater poppers, frogs, chatterbaits, and a ned rig. DB smelts and Mooselook Wobblers trolled slowly yield the majority of trout and salmon, with action heating up on Sebago lake. The Saco river below Skelton Dam has excellent brown trout and smallmouth bass fishing from shore as well.
