June Report
The first few trips on the Rita B. Yielded some excellent haddock fishing, with the better sized fish caught on a 12 hour marathon trip, fairly far offshore. Enjoyed a decent humpback show on that trip, as well. Lots of cusk in the mix with the haddock, especially on the far offshore grounds. Inshore cod fishing (catch and release) has been very good, with constant action for those just looking to bend a rod. We caught the biggest cunner I've ever seen, at 2.3 lbs it was just .2 lbs short of the state record. Cunner are excellent eating, if you're lucky enough to get one big enough to filet. The water has been colder than we've been used to the last few years, and the mackerel seem to be a little sluggish as a result. We saw them on Jeffreys Ledge and some are starting to get caught inshore. I haven't been striper fishing yet, but between high water in the rivers and colder water temps, i'm hearing it's a slow start. Every lobster in our five traps has been a hardshell so far. Word from the old timer lobstermen is that the shed will be late this year.
